Jackson County up for adoption-Sun Herald 10/30/05

PASCAGOULA - Rebuild Jackson County continues to gain momentum, reaching out across the country for financial supporters to help the recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

"I've been on the Internet getting towns and cities to adopt us and some have," said Cherie Cole, executive director of Rebuild Jackson County, a program under the Bacot-McCarty Foundation, an established local charity with no salaries or overhead.

"Our mission is to bring money in and channel it to help us bounce back," she said. "We are helping individuals and businesses get answers as they rebuild their lives."

Cole said they are working with faith-based ministries, which have already provided extensive assistance. "I'm locating a warehouse where they can store wallboard, which they will put up to help families get back into their homes."

The program administered a $500,000 grant from Chevron Refinery, which helped 35 day-care centers reopen. "We've got schools and day cares reopened, and now we need to get homes and businesses rebuilt and people back on the job," Cole added.

Todd Trenchard, executive director of the Bacot-McCarty Foundation, said they have contacted every Jackson County in all the states "to get those counties to partner with us in rebuilding our Jackson County."

He said almost $10,000 was raised last week in a golf tournament in Washington, D.C. "Royce (Cumbest) is on the Governor's Rebuilding Commission, which will channel some funds through us from the 'Mississippi Rising' television special in Oxford that raised $15 million."

"We're just trying to fill a gap as we rebuild Jackson County," Cole said

Coast cities are 'adopted' by others eager to help - Sun Herald 9/14/05

Susan Simpson Clark may live in Beaufort, S.C., but her heart remains in Long Beach.

...And, so does Jackson County, made up of Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, Gautier, St. Martin, Moss Point and other smaller communities.

The county has teamed up with the non-profit group Bacot/ McCarty Foundation, which has set up a "Hurricane Relief - Rebuild Jackson County Fund" at Merchant's and Marine Bank.
Helping the hundreds of thousands of Jackson County residents is Douglas County, Colo., which has set a goal to raise $1 million for relief efforts.

"That area has kind of been the more forgotten site. I have heard that there is no help getting there," said Shannon Moynahan, one of 10 Castle Rock, Colo., residents who has formed "Douglas County Cares."

Of the 135,000 residents of Jackson County, Moynahan learned that more than 100,000 are homeless as a result of the hurricane.

Douglas County Cares is organizing a Katrina relief event Sept. 23 at the Douglas County Fair Grounds.

"If 10 counties adopted Jackson County and 10 counties adopted Harrison County, we could get the Gulf Coast back on its feet," Moynahan said.
